    Apple iPhone 3.0 Review

Today was Apple’s iPhone 3.0 Software event, and iPhone users will now have to think up a bunch of other things to moan about in its wake. Among the laundry list of over 100 new feature additions are some of the most frequently talked about omissions, including Cut, Copy & Paste, MMS, landscape keyboard support for all main Apple applications, and push notification for third-party apps.

    New iPhone SDK

But that’s just a taste of what was revealed at Cupertino today. Developers will probably be a very happy crowd, since the new developer’s SDK gives them access to over 1,000 new APIs.

    Push Notification

That includes the above mentioned push notification API, which allows developers to provide audio, text or badge icon notifications for their apps. Just to be clear, the apps aren’t actually running in the background, which Apple says is too costly in terms of battery life. Instead, updates are pushed from the developers server using Apple’s own notification system.

    Google Maps

Other highlights for developers include Google Maps integration, so that maps will open right in the apps, instead of redirecting users outside to the official app. Some apps have tried to get around this by using their own maps, or maps from Yahoo, but the result has been clumsy at best.

    Peripheral Support

Also noteworthy is hardware-specific app integration, which allows apps to be designed to work with different peripherals, connected to the iPhone via either the proprietary dock connector or Bluetooth. Demos of how this might work included using the iPhone as an equalizer for a stereo dock, and as a blood glucose monitor with a blood-testing device for diabetics.

    P2P

Bluetooth can also now be used for peer-to-peer support, allowing iPhones to communicate with each other for multiplayer gaming, and other applications. App developer Smule showed off using this to perform a musical duet with their new Leaf Trombone instrument application.

    Turn-by-Turn Navigation

The iPhone will also be able to support turn-by-turn navigation when 3.0 is released, although developers will have to provide their own maps due to licensing issues. Still, expect to see Garmin or some of the other big names jump on this bandwagon early.

    Business Models/Payment Schemes

Last but not least, apps will be able to offer paid content, upgrades, and subscriptions from within, sidestepping the App Store altogether. This means the doors are open to a whole host of new business models, which could decrease a lot of the current clutter with regards to different versions of apps depending on price, and the litany of stand-alone book and comic apps. EA demoed the Sims 3 to show how this system can be used in terms of additional downloadable content in games.
    iPhone 3.0 for End-Users

    Copy/Cut/Paste

Developers aside, iPhone end-users will be pleased to find that many of their prayers have been answered. A full, cross-app, platform-wide Copy/Paste solution is present in 3.0, and it works exactly like Kevin Rose described yesterday. HTML copy is supported, as is image cutting, copying, and pasting, and you can now paste multiple images into an email as attachments.

    Landscape Typing

The landscape keyboard can now be used in Mail, Notes and the new Messaging app, which replaces SMS. Good news for the chubby-fingered, like myself. This is a huge plus, since it’ll decrease some app store clutter and free up some space on my home screen.

    MMS and A2DP

Messaging now supports MMS (iPhone 3G only), including picture, audio, contact and location messages. A2DP stereo support is also now present for owners of the 3G model iPhone, so you can break out those neglected Bluetooth headphones and enjoy being wire-free.

    Voice Memo

A new Voice Memo app takes the place of the many third-party recorder apps currently available, allowing you to record, save, and email audio files natively.

    Spotlight

Also completely new is Spotlight, and iPhone version of the Mac’s integrated search. Accessible by swiping left from your home screen, it gives you one-stop searching across your phone. Search is now present in Mail, SMS and basically every default Apple application. Spotlight will also search the names of third-party apps, so you can use it as a launcher if you have lots of pages on your springboard.

Overall, iPhone 3.0 seems like a long overdue correction of a number of oversights, with some exciting development tools thrown in. Don’t get too excited yet, though, since most of us will still have to wait for summer to take advantage of the new features. Developers can get their hands on a development beta right now, though. When it does drop, the update will be free for iPhone users, but iPod touch owner (both generations) will have to pay $9.95 for the update.

iPhone OS 3.0 is here soon!

Many of the iPhone's long-awaited features will finally become reality Wednesday when Apple rolls out iPhone OS 3.0.

At long last, cut-copy-paste comes to the iPhone Wednesday.

Current iPhone owners can download the software from iTunes for free, and iPod Touch users can get it as well, but for a fee of $9.95, just like the last OS update. What time exactly, we don't know yet. Apple will only say iPhone OS 3.0 will come out sometime Wednesday.
The update includes many functions other phones have had for a while, including multimedia messaging (if supported by your carrier--AT&T won't offer it until later this summer), voice recording, buying and renting movies and TV shows over the air, full system search, tethering (again, if your carrier allows it), and push notifications.

Apple has also bundled in some extras, like landscape virtual keyboard for certain apps, more extensive parental controls, in-app purchasing, and a feature for MobileMe customers called Find My Phone.

There will also be stereo Bluetooth available, as well as the capability to create applications specifically for interfacing with third-party hardware. That could lead to a boon in the accessories market for the iPhone as well as the iPod Touch, as my CNET colleague Donald Bell has pointed out.

As anticipated as Wednesday's OS 3.0 launch is, it's only the second most important product rollout for Apple this week. The new iPhone 3G S is scheduled to hit stores Friday morning. In the meantime, check out our First Take of the new iPhone and our detailed look at OS 3.0.

    Windows 7

Last week, Microsoft announced that Windows Vista users will soon be able to upgrade to Windows 7 for free. Consumers who buy Windows Vista during Microsoft's upgrade period will receive a free copy of Windows 7 when it's released on Oct. 22. So far, there's no word on when Microsoft will start the free upgrade program. Recent rumors suggest it might announce the start of that program by the end of June. Either way, it's Microsoft's ploy to get people to buy Windows Vista and more importantly, keep buying computers, until Windows 7 finally hits store shelves this fall.

For some consumers, it might make sense. They can get that computer they want now and when Windows 7 is released, upgrade to the new software. For the impatient, it's a great option. But for the enterprise, companies that have a vested interest in ensuring their computers are running at the highest level at all times, it's a far more difficult decision to make. Installing Vista now makes it easier to upgrade to Windows 7 later this year. That said, buying new hardware, complete with Windows 7, is far more convenient.

Is it convenience or a desire to upgrade that should chart the enterprise's path going forward? Easy: convenience.

Companies shouldn't be upgrading to Vista

In the enterprise, companies usually replace existing hardware every three to four years. In that time, they upgrade software to ensure it's the latest and greatest on the market. But in recent years, that hasn't been happening. Save for those companies that decided to upgrade their hardware with XP just before Windows Vista was released, the vast majority of organizations today are suffering with outdated hardware out of fear of upgrading to Windows Vista. Instead of using an operating system that might cause severe compatibility issues and hinder their ability to do business, most organizations have instead chosen to get by with XP.

It's definitely time for an upgrade. But Vista isn't the answer now just because Microsoft will offer a free upgrade to Windows 7. Sure, Windows 7 might be ideal for the enterprise when it's released in October, but Vista hasn't changed. It's still bloated and it's still rife with incompatibility issues that will undoubtedly scare some companies away. A free upgrade path to Microsoft's latest operating system isn't changing that. Windows Vista is the same operating system before Microsoft announced the free upgrade. If companies didn't want it before, what makes us think they would want it afterwards?

There's another issue afoot that should make companies balk at upgrading to Vista to get Windows 7 for free: it's not conducive to maintaining employee productivity.

Windows XP is much different than Windows Vista. Sure, it has the same basic elements as every other Windows operating system, but it's flashy, many of the files that were easy to find in XP aren't so easy to find in Vista, and its User Account Control feature is enough to scare even the most advanced employee away. Companies would need to spend considerable time teaching employees the nuances of Windows Vista. They need to explain to employees that the Windows they've grown accustomed to is gone. They would need to teach them how to maneuver around a new operating system that they simply aren't familiar with. It takes time.

And since it takes time, it doesn't make much sense to do it. By the time employees get comfortable using Vista, the company will be upgrading to Windows 7, forcing them to re-educate employees. So, for the months spanning July through October, productivity will probably be down. In this economy, that's unacceptable.

We also can't forget how much time IT managers will waste by following this strategy. They will need to get new computers, dole those out to employees company-wide, and only then get down to the business of educating employees on the new operating system. Once complete, they'll need to order Windows 7, install it network-wide and then educate employees all over again. It would be a nightmare.

One reason to upgrade to Vista?

There might be one reason why companies would consider upgrading to Windows Vista before they upgrade to Windows 7: the upgrade path.

According to Microsoft, Windows XP users won't have a direct upgrade path to Windows 7. Because of that, companies will be forced to copy files from a Windows XP machine and add them to the new Windows 7 computers.

But those who have Windows Vista installed will have a direct upgrade path. So, when Windows 7 is installed, all the files on the Vista computer will be automatically transferred to the Windows 7 installation. That makes it quite easy.

But is that enough? Of course not.

It is time to upgrade to a new version of Windows. But Windows Vista to Windows 7 isn't the right path to follow. The enterprise should wait for Windows 7 -- and let Microsoft's free upgrade offer pass by.

    Juliet

When we first met Juliet we got to know that she was a "baby-doctor". Now, she didn't know how to remove a bullet from the girl that came in, who was shot by sun. She had to get jack to get it out and she said i'm not a doctor/surgeon. Now, in the future she removes jacks appendix on a piece of plane on the beach, she said "I did lots of "them" in my internship~. That would make removing a bullet rather easy, than removing an appendix? Am I wrong..? and doesn't it take like days to bleed out from a shot to the stomach?(at least regarding the movie reservoir dogs...) Well, her case might have been worse.. Maybe this has something to do with the changing of the past /future?

    The truth is out there...

    'David' John Arthur Carradine

  • Own words.
David Carradine was one of my favorite actors. He's a one of a kind actor and I will miss seeing him in movies. So, rest in peace 'David' John Arthur Carradine. You left too soon and you will be missed!

  • Biography.
    Date of Birth
8 December 1936, Hollywood, California, USA

    Date of Death
    3 June 2009, Bangkok, Thailand

David Carradine is the eldest son of legendary character actor John Carradine and now presides over an acting family that includes brothers Keith Carradine, Robert Carradine and Michael Bowen as well as his daughters Calista Carradine, Kansas Carradine and nieces Ever Carradine and Martha Plimpton.

He was born in Hollywood and educated at San Francisco State College, where he studied music theory and composition. It was while writing music for the Drama Department's annual revues that he discovered his own passion for the stage, joining a Shakespearean repertory company and learning his craft on his feet.

After a two-year stint in the army, he found work in New York as a commercial artist and later found fame on Broadway in "The Deputy" and "The Royal Hunt of the Sun" opposite Christopher Plummer. With that experience he returned to Hollywood, landing the short-lived TV series "Shane" (1966) before being tapped to star opposite Barbara Hershey in Martin Scorsese's first Hollywood film, Boxcar Bertha (1972). The iconic "Kung Fu" (1972) followed, catapulting Carradine to superstardom for the next three years, until he left the series to pursue his film career.

That career now includes more than 100 feature films, a couple of dozen television movies, a whole range of theater on and off Broadway, and another hit series, Kung Fu: The Legend Continues (1992) (TV). Carradine received the Best Actor Award from the National Board of Film Review as well as a Golden Globe nomination for his portrayal of Woody Guthrie in Hal Ashby's Bound for Glory (1976), and won critical acclaim for his work as Cole Younger in The Long Riders (1980). "Kung Fu" also received seven Emmy nominations in its first season, including one for Carradine as Best Actor. In addition he won the People's Prize at the Cannes Film Festival's "Director's Fortnight" for his work on Americana (1983), and a second Golden Globe nomination for his supporting role in "North and South" (1985).

Among his other most notable film credits are Gray Lady Down (1978), Mean Streets (1973), Bird on a Wire (1990), The Long Goodbye (1973), The Serpent's Egg (1977) and Circle of Iron (1978).

He recently returned to the screen in what could be his greatest performance to date, playing the title role in Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill: Vol. 1 (2003) and Kill Bill: Vol. 2 (2004) (Miramax), for which he received his fourth Golden Globe nomination.

Carradine has also continued his devotion to music, and has recorded some 60 tracks from various musical genres and sung in several movies. He makes his home in Los Angeles with his wife Annie, her four children and their two dogs. (bio from IMDB)
